Oral Health Care: 4 Tips For Healthier, Bleeding-Free Gums

One of the more common, but unpleasant, experiences people deal with in their mouth is bleeding. Sometimes, the gums bleed seemingly randomly; however, that's usually not the case. If your gums are bleeding, try using these four tips to stop it:

1. Brush Properly

If your gums are bleeding, you should make sure you are brushing properly. Brushing too hard or with a brush that is too hard might be causing the bleeding. So when brushing, try to brush in soft circular motions. You do not need to use a lot of pressure or "dig" into your teeth. Additionally, make sure you are brushing twice per day and flossing once per day. If you aren't brushing often enough, your gums might be bleeding because they are not healthy.

As for your toothbrush, you do not need to use a hard-bristled brush unless your dentist says otherwise. A soft or medium bristled brush will do the job just fine, without causing irritation or bleeding.

2. Use Mouthwash

Bleeding gums are usually a sign of infection. One of the best ways to increase oral health and reduce bleeding is by using mouthwash. You can use any type of anti-bacterial mouthwash that you desire. It doesn't even need to contain alcohol, if you find that the burning in unpleasant. Rinse for about a minute twice per day with the mouthwash to freshen breath and increase oral and gum health—thereby reducing bleeding.

3. Salt Water

If you have recently undergone dental treatment and find that your gums are bleeding, try using a salt water rinse. The warm water and salt will help soothe gums, reduce inflammation, and control bleeding. All you need to do is put a pinch or two of salt into a glass of warm water, and rinse. Do this a few times per day.
